Upright
balance, blending, moderation, patience
An angel pours liquid between two cups without spilling, one foot on land and one in water. Temperance is the art of the right proportion — not compromise exactly, but the patient mixing of things that do not obviously go together until they do. Upright, it counsels the middle path and the long timescale: this is being made slowly, and slowly is correct.
Reversed
excess, imbalance, impatience
Reversed, the proportions have gone wrong. Too much of one thing — work, drink, giving, restraint — and the mixture has separated. It also speaks to impatience with a process that has its own pace, and to the specific error of trying to fix an imbalance by overcorrecting hard in the other direction.
